An
important note to my valued customers:
There will be no calendar for
2009. The
2008 year has been very challenging because
of organizers and their agreements with vendors.
Policies enforced by the NDCA have encouraged
organizers to sign "exlusive" deals with
photographers. These deals mean that anyone
with a professional camera is not allowed
in the ballroom. These practices have gone
on for years, but until 2008 a number of
organizers gave me special permission to
shoot at their competition. The NDCA made
an issue of this and they all told me that
they could not allow that this year because
they got their hands slapped and even threatened
with lawsuits. This meant I was shut out
of Embassy Ball, Canada Dancsport, Crystal
Leaf, Emerald, Vegas, San Francisco and San
Diego. In more than one of these competitions,
the organizer lost $1400 in revenue because
my team didn't attend, so I question whether
their "exclusive" arrangement actually paid
for itself.
The IDSF issued a public letter calling for an end
to these tactics, as they inhibit awareness
of Dancesport. Studies have also shown that
when the public is allowed to shoot without
restrictions, the professional vendors tend
to sell just as many of their shots as they
do when they have exclusive arrangements, so
it makes little sense to keep doing this. Some
of the organizers I spoke to said that they
will not be renewing the contracts, but that
they had to ride out the term of the deals,
many of them expiring in 2008.
I did not
want to produce a calendar using old shots.
Costumes have changed. Couples have changed
-- many moving up to professional category
from amateur. Relationships and routines have
changed. So I didn't want to show old stuff
in a new calendar. An excellent Blackpool calendar
is available from Star Dance
Shop. You might
want to consider using that for 2009. Thanks
for your interest in my calendar, and for your
support. I hope to have more success next year,
and to be back with an even better calendar
than any previous ones.
